The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) was established by Government of India in 1994 under an Act of Parliament for providing scientific and technological education in the country. IIT Guwahati is the 6th member in the IIT family.
Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati presently conducts the following programmes at the post-graduate level leading to master degrees:
M.Tech.
* Chemical Engineering
* Civil Engineering
* Computer Science & Engineering
* Electronics & Communication Engineering
* Mechanical Engineering
Eligibility:
Indian Nationals: A valid GATE score in an appropriate discipline and a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks in the qualifying degree (GATE is not required for candidates having B.Tech degree from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) fulfilling the following specific requirements :
Computer Science & Engineering: Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent in an appropriate area or M.Sc (Computer Science/Information Technology) or MCA from a recognized Institution and GATE score in CS or IT.
Foreign candidates:
The IIT Guwahati offers admission to foreign candidates who are either sponsored or self financed. The eligibility criteria for such candidates are same as that for Indian Nationals. However the application form is different.
The Institute admits M.Tech students under the following categories:
I)REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
These are students who work full-time for their M.Tech degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognized funding agency.
II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, governmental organization or industry for doing M.Tech in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute.
III) PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who can attend classes at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute. The applicant must be a regular employee of a recognized organization with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute to such students. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organization in which he/she is employed (Form II) must be enclosed at the time of application.

The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:
I) REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
These are students who work full time for their PhD degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognized funding agencies like UGC, CSIR etc.
II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, Academic institution, governmental organization or industry for doing PhD in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year's professional experience in the respective field. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter must be attached with the application.
III) SELF-FINANCED
A student in this category works full-time or part time for the PhD degree. He/She must have at least one year's professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
V) PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year's professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organization in which he/she is employed must be enclosed at the time of application.
VI) EXTERNAL
This category refers to a candidate employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization, but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre of IIT Guwahati, in which he is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year's professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organization in which he/she is employed must be enclosed at the time of application.
Eligibility:
PhD Candidates
a) Master's degree in Science with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks and a valid GATE score/NET certificate. OR
b) Master's degree in Engineering/Technology/Design with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. OR
c) Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Design from any Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0. OR
d) Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Design from any institute (other than IITs) with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid GATE/CEED score.
