Students who are aiming for good institutes including the IIts that offer M.Tech programmes and have not got less than 60 per cent marks or equivalent grade and have qualified Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) with a high score in the relevant branch will be liable to get MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) scholarships for pursuing M.Tech or M.E.
Almost all engineering colleges, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), admit students to M.Tech or M.E. programmes based on GATE scores. Moreover some institutes specify GATE as the mandatory qualification even for admitting students to the self-financing seats.
Several institutes admit meritorious graduates in information technology to the programmes in software engineering; computer and information science; computer science and engineering; industrial engineering; engineering statistics; and so on besides information technology.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, conducts an M.Tech course in computer science and engineering. Those who have a valid GATE score in computer science are eligible for admission.

He is the youngest post graduate from IIT-Madras. Born on September 25, 1990, Chandrasekar from the beginning was inquisitive and picking up things very quickly. This quality made him the youngest Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Cisco Certified Network Associate at 11 years.
He was also appointed an honorary director of the Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council – Center of Relevance and Excellence in network engineering in August 2002.
Moreoverin the year 2002, an Anna University committee, headed by the then vice-chancellor Dr Balaguruswamy, assessed the boy's capabilities and decided to admit him into the BE programme, which he was able to clear when he was just 15.
He then took the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering and scored 99.32 percentile, which encouraged him to approach the IITs for MTech. When asked about his future plans he said, “I want to continue as a researcher in TCS RMD in Chennai for some more time. I would also like to get a management degree at some point in my career so I won't just have theoretical knowledge. Best of both worlds."

GATE CUT OFF

Exam cut off’s or cut off list is a list of candidates, get selected for any course or higher studies on the basis of their academic performance. Different institutes offer different cut off percentage as their selection criteria. More competition also raises the cut off percentage.

Similarly, with GATE exam, after taking the exam students are not just offered with the admissions, preference is given or candidate is selected on the basis of GATE scorecard record with a proper cut off list procedure, so that a candidate with a high score should be preferred first. GATE result is declared on 31st March every year and after that candidates start approaching different institutes for admissions and institutes mentioned their selection criteria and also important dates related to various selection steps. The percentile score card of candidate shows the performance of the candidate and also the cut off list shows the overall performance of candidate which includes his/her GATE scores with written test and interview performance also. Competition level also increases the cutoff rank.

Here is the cut off of various departments in IIT-Kanpur:

The Private pharmacy colleges in the state have started their admission process inspite of High courts ruling. As per the HC orders unaided pharmacy institutions offering Master's studies to had to prepare an admission schedule with the state government and student representatives. Despite that the colleges started their admossion process and have stated acception application forms.
The Association of Unaided Private Pharmacy Colleges (AUPPC) conducted its common entrance test even before the state universities declared the final BPharm results and have even begun the admission process.
On the other hand the state also conducts an entrance exam for admissions to its three institutions at Aurangabad, Amravati and Karad, as well as for entry to some governmentaided institutions.
On the petition filed by an NGO, Forum Against Commercialisation of Education (FACE), court had siad that FACE and the AUPPC should decide on trhe schedule which the private colleges should follow. But despite all this the private colleges did not bothered to discuss their admission schedule with the state.

Further FACE's petition also demands that admissions to all colleges be conducted on the basis of the government common entrance test scores or the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores for last year or this year.

Catalogs News -> How it was to be in the first batch of IIT-M -> Go to message
This Post 0 points    (Olaaa!! Perrrfect answer.   in 0 votes )   [?]
Many from the first batch of IIT-M today are working successfully as the CEOs, professors, scientists and entrepreneurs and today they are proud to be the first graduates of what now stands as a global brand name. IIT-M completed its Golden Jubilee this year, however half a century ago, there used to be 92 B.Tech students who made it to the first batch of Indian Institute of Technology-Madras.

S.Srinivasan recalls getting admission to an unknown institution that time- “I applied after seeing a small news item in The Hindu. My uncle recommended that I apply to this new institute rather than the more established CEG [College of Engineering], Guindy. My mother was so angry with him for sending me off to a jungle.”

Similar is what Mallik Putcha says writing in the campus paper, after a quarter of century- “Back then, IIT existed in the minds of the planners and its physical presence was discerned in the borrowed classrooms of AC Tech.” He also added by saying that the premises lied in jungle which was untouched with no buildings in the campus ready for studies for the first batch of students.

R. Mahadevan recalls- “We lived at the old Presidency College women’s hostel in Saidapet. We used to cycle from there and cross the Adyar River by boat. I remember the ride used to cost us about 25 paise a week.” At that time there was no entrance examination, but yes we had to submit our PUC (Pre-University Certificate) marks and performance report of an intensive interview, said Mr. Srinivasan.

Mahadevan still remembers how difficult it was to understand the accent of German professors on the panel during the interview that made it tougher. “Dr. Koch, who taught Physics, would tell us we must learn to ‘sink’. It was some time before we realized he meant ‘think’,” said Dr. Mahadevan. Paying equal importance to practical classes, open book examination, the importance given to the analytical ability versus rote learning, and the ‘surprise test’ for continuous evaluation made the IIT system different from its contemporaries- said Mr. Srinivasan.

After the completion of first year, the students were moved to the current campus to start classes in the Civil Engineering building and began life at Cauvery hostel. As Mr. Mahadevan said “We lived with a cross-section of India, learning due to the cultural confluence,” recalling how they enjoyed the varied Indian cuisines including south Indian, north Indian as well as Bengali cuisine.

In July’64, the first graduates of IIT-M were given their degrees by the President himself, S. Radhakrishnan, along with a dinner hosted by the staff at the High Voltage Lab.
Catalogs News -> Quota Affecting the Merit in GATE results -> Go to message

The most-talked about decision of Union HRD minister Arjun Singh, to implement OBC quota in GATE is putting the merit system on the verge of risk across the country. Students who took the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) this year were shown the way out inspite of them scoring high as compared to the students who took the exam last year, qualified despite scoring low.

This anomaly situation is the result of the notification that the HRD ministry sent to IITS and IISc, Bangalore last year ordering them to qualify GATE candidates in accordance of the OBC quota accomplishment. Consequently, IIT-Kanpur that organized GATE last year cleared almost 4,000 candidates which is supposedly almost twice the number of students usually declared as GATE-qualified.

The whole idea behind was to increase the total number of seats so that after 27% of seats reserved for OBC quota, the number of students in the general category wouldn’t drop. Also the qualifying score for GATE has been lowered from last year to clear more students. Since GATE scores are valid for two years, many students who qualified with lower scores last year are eligible for this year’s admission.

However, as per the Right to information application, The Indian Institute of Science, the organizing GATE institute for 2008, has acknowledged “Candidates with the same scores in the two years are equivalent because the raw scores were normalized.

India has been a name synonymous with high-tech engineering and technical education across the globe since decades. The education related to engineering and technical arenas has been developing faster than anywhere else on earth. Ever since the early eighties, the era of rapid industrialization and economic growth India was recognized as a hub of some of the most hard-working and intelligent engineers of the world.

Today, India boasts of its position as the second largest number of engineering students in the world for all of which the medium of instruction is English. In accordance to the recent survey by the United Nations, the Indian economy is one of the fastest economies holding back 6th position and expected to reach fourth position till the end of the century. With the latest advancements made in the field of scientific, industrial and technological areas, chiefly in space, nuclear and missile technology, computer engineering and information science, India is emerging as the reckoned world power.

“Engineering” is derived from Latin word “ingeniare” that stands for “to design” or “to create”. Engineering is the term that stands for application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes such as engines, machines and structures. The foundation of engineering educations was done way back in the year 1847, when Thomason College of Civil Engineering at Roorkee was established which is today renowned as Roorkee University (1949). It was India’s first engineering university and yes, the foundation of strong and steady journey of technical education in India.

Furthermore, the establishment of the All-India Council of Technical Education in 1945 and the report of the scientific manpower committee (1947) had an in-depth confluence in the overall development. The development of engineering allied educational facilities has been unparalleled during the last decade.

There are institutes offering varied three year diploma courses in diverse branches of engineering and technology offered by different polytechnics. The eligibility criteria for selection in these diploma courses, is to pass in class 10 examinations clearly. There are many polytechnics that offer post 10+2 diplomas and post-grad diplomas as well. Similarly the eligibility for admission in B.E (B.Tech) and B.Arch course is passing in 10+2 examination in the science stream with mathematics.

Coming to the apex portion of engineering education, the post-graduate programmes led to a degree in M.E/M.Tech and M.Arch degree that comprises of duration of 18 months i.e three semesters. Candidates are required to pursue specialization in one of the subject of their study at the first degree level.

The number of engineering graduates has accelerated to 60,000 in the year 1996. Similarly the number of polytechnic diploma holders increased to 96,000 (approx.). This accelerating increase in the field of engineering forced AICTE to ascertain the quality of education they are providing to the future of not only India but the world. A National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has been set-up to introduce a system of accreditation of each and every program offered by the recognized institutions.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is held for admission to varied M.Tech admissions in most of the institutes of national repute. Scoring high in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a pre-requisite not only for NITs, IITs but also for several private-owned institutions across the country. Not only this, while conducting interviews for admission, 70% of weightage is given to GATE score and 30% is meant for academic merit by most of the premier institutes.
All the institutions declare the minimum percentage of marks required and GATE score is essential for almost all of these institutes. Hence, GATE is the way for all those who are looking for admission to M.Tech or post-graduate programme with scholarship or assistantship from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). For all those who have already tried for admissions in M.Tech must be aware that there are numerous colleges that specify GATE score as a mandatory qualification even for admission without MHRD scholarship.
Although only GATE qualification does not guarantees admission in the top level institutes like IITs, where only those candidates are eligible who score high in GATE. As per the MHRD regulations, the post-graduate scholarship or assistantship is valid for a maximum time period of 24 months for master’s degree in engineering, technology, architecture or pharmacy.
Additionally, GATE- qualified candidates are also entitled for Junior Research Fellowship in the projects and laboratories of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). There are many government organizations today, who prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the posts of scientists or engineers.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India examination which is conducted by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as well as the seven IITs on behalf of the Co-ordinating board- Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. As of now, by and large coordination and responsibility of conducting GATE-2009 lies with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorke (designated as the organizing institute for GATE-2009).
As far as the exam is related, it comprises of a single exam paper of 3 hour duration and with maximum marks being 150. This generally consists of 2 sections- Section A (objective) with 75 marks and Section B (Problem Type) which is of 75 marks. Students can opt for the subject and study as per the syllabus of GATE. The result of qualified candidates is given in terms of All India Rank and signifies percentile score. For example, a percentile score of 99 means that one in the top 1% category of the candidate who appeared for GATE.
As mentioned above, GATE score are valid for 2 years and so if the student is not satisfied with the earlier score, they can reappear in the GATE exam get a new score that can be used for admission purposes.

Since time immemorial, education has been holistic topic in Indian culture and the “Gurukul” kind of education has been the root of current scenario of higher education in India. In erstwhile India, Gurukul was the place where the teachers used to teach their students with strict discipline and gave them quality education that has never been an exception since period of Vedas. For kings, this education was looked upon as holistic and students used to practice all those subjects more holistically.

Education for children has been an issue of immense importance amongst every household in India. Be it Engineering, medical, electronics, humanities or any other discipline, proper higher education in any field is considered very important. Talking of higher education in engineering, the allied colleges are affiliated to All India Council for Technical Education AICTE. The institute keeps the quality of education at par with the international standards, which is heritage India. All engineering colleges or institutes offer post graduate (ME or MTech) programmes and there are number of private and government colleges available in plenty under each State of India and under almost universities providing degree and PG in professional courses such as engineering disciplines.

India has some of top engineering institutions in the world that offer cheapest, affordable and superior quality medical, dental and engineering courses. Higher education in engineering is considered very important as it leads you directly into a job, or at least defines particular career and area of work. Also, there are several job opportunities for which further formal education is neither necessary nor required. Still there are number of students who are not sure whether they want to opt for these courses or instead they should explore avenues of their own interest.

The general science degree exposes the student to a variety of subjects and by the time one completes three year of study, they get a fair idea of what interests them. There are several fields where a job is possible even after a basic engineering graduation degree but obtaining a master’s degree helps the candidates in a long run. Now the question arises, what is exactly the advantage of post-graduate degree? For many, a candidate with a post-graduate degree is considered more favorably in the job market.

Post graduate qualification is highly important in professional fields such as engineering. Taking an example of large engineering or consulting firms, one will find out that almost all those who head departments hold a master’s degree apart from those who have proved themselves in long period of offering service. Under-estimating the power of master’s degree in any discipline is highly important and proves out to be very beneficial for building career in any stream. This is the reason why numerous students are opting for post graduate degree after pursuing graduation in engineering.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all –India Examination conducted by the six Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

The objective of the exam is to identify meritorious and inspired candidates for admission to Post Graduate Programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Pharmacy at the National level. In addition it serves as a benchmark for improvement of the Undergraduate Engineering Education in the country.
Now a days an ME or M.Tech degree is a desirable qualification for our young engineers seeking a rewarding professional career. Engineering students, while in the final year of their degree course, spend considerable time in seeking an opportunity to pursue higher studies in foreign universities, being oblivious of the fact that there are several institutions in the country, offering specialized postgraduate programmes in various disciplines.
Attractive scholarships, Assistantships for postgraduate courses in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy in engineering colleges or institutes in the country are available to those who qualify through GATE. Many of the engineering colleges and institutes specify GATE as a mandatory qualification even for admission to their postgraduate programmes. Further GATE qualified candidates (in engineering subjects) are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in CSIR Laboratories.
With India becoming the hub of research and development (R&D) activities where several companies abroad are outsourcing these activities to Indian research institutions like CSIR, M.Tech., students have a big chance to grab more opportunities in the research sector where a PG degree carries weight.
Many top-notch industries and business houses are using the GATE score as one of the performance indicators for making recruitments. Some industries and universities abroad have even shown their interest in obtaining particulars of GATE qualified candidates. So a student who has completed B.Tech. at a State engineering college can look forward to doing M.Tech. in a more reputed institute like an IIT or NIT by taking GATE and thus increase his value in the job market.
The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration and carries a maximum of 150 marks. The eligibility criteria for appearing in the Gate examination are as follows:

•    Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy and those who are in the final or pre final year of such programmes.
•  Master's degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes. However, if the degree is in Master of Computer Applications, the candidate should have had courses in Mathematics at the Bachelor's or Master's level.

•    Candidates in the second or higher year of the (Post B.Sc.) Four-Year Integrated Master's degree programme in Engineering/ Technology or in the third or higher year of the Five-year Integrated Master's degree/ Dual degree programme in Engineering/ Technology. Candidates with qualifications obtained through examination conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/ AICTE as equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.
Before applying for GATE 2008, candidates must assure themselves that they have chosen the right paper, which qualifies them to become eligible to seek admission to the specific programme they are interested in. The criteria for postgraduate admission with Scholarship/ Assistantship are different in various Institutes. The zones and the corresponding administrative institutes are:

Zone 1 - Indian Institute of Science Bangalore

Zone 2 - Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

Zone 3 - Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

Zone 4 - Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati

Zone 5 - Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

Zone 6 - Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

Zone 7 - Indian Institute of Technology Madras

Zone 8 - Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
So if one wants to pursue M.Tech program in a leading institute of the country and get a good placement or if one wants to go for specialization in the area of interest, GATE is literally a gateway to higher education and a promising career in engineering.
