GATE or the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering in an All-Indian scale examination conducted in the eight zones of the country by the GATE committee that consists of esteemed IISc, Bangalore and seven IITs and on behalf of the National Coordinating board- GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted to identify commendable aspirants for getting admission to varied post graduate courses such as Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Pharmacy at the National level.

GATE is a mandatory qualification for admission in many post-graduate engineering colleges as well as institutions across the country. After qualifying for GATE, students find ways to get admission with attractive scholarships in assistantship post-graduate courses in engineering, technology, architecture, pharmacy at engineering colleges, institutes located in the length and breadth of the country.

Additionally, for colleges of their choice, candidates need to find out the procedure of final selection and award of assistantship from the allied institution. Also, those who clear GATE successfully are also eligible foe junior research fellowship in CSIR Laboratories.

One can take up GATE, as post graduate degree in engineering leads to further specialization in the certain field. Obviously after M.Tech students get an opportunity to pursue Ph.D. Masters degree is beneficial for those who further Research positions in educational as well as R&D institutes. Those who are in 3rd year of their study or those who are appearing for Final year must sit for GATE as the results for GATE are valid for 2 years and the required syllabus of GATE is over within 5 semesters.

International Institute of Information Technology – Bangalore (IIT-B)
Established in September 1999, IIIT-Bangalore is a new generation Graduate School focusing on all aspects of information technology. It has the status of a University (conferred under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956), and is promoted by the Government of Karnataka and the IT industry.  With its proficient and well informed faculty IIIT-Bangalore has been able to attract high quality students from all over India into its acclaimed M.Tech. M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs.
Achieving 100% placement of all its graduates, the institute has a strong placement program. The graduates have found challenging assignments with several multinational and Indian giants of the IT industry. The amalgamation of broad-based curriculum good ties with the industry ensures that the students are equipped with the right skills to be highly productive and ready to take on real-world IT challenges when they graduate.
Even before the students graduate, the Institute's internship program gives the students an opportunity to get a good exposure of the real-world projects as part of the final semester. An avenue for placement, the internship program enables students to get job offers by the companies they work for in the final semester.
Fundamental to Information Technology is the integration of different technologies and the integration of technologies into organizations. The M.Tech. program is a four semester program. The first three semesters of the program constitute academic course work. During the fourth semester, a student can either take up an industry internship or academic research at the institute leading to a thesis.
Electives are offered in several areas of information technology such as:

  • Distributed computing.

  • Computer networks.

  • Digital signal processing.

  • Software engineering.

  • Information systems (such as GIScience , Information Retrieval and Data Modeling).

Admission to M.Tech. Program is made on the basis of prior academic performance (at various centers nationwide), and an admission interview (held in May at the Institute in Bangalore). The minimum qualification for admission to the programs in the Institute is a first-class four-year bachelor's degree in engineering (i.e. B.E., B.Tech., or equivalent). Final-year students expecting to graduate by August 2008 may also apply.
Performance in the GATE examination in computer science or a related area may also be considered in admission decisions. Government scholarships, if available, require students to have taken the GATE exam (though this need not necessarily be in computer science).

IIT students are hit hard due to the economic slowdown. This resulted in very bad response for placements. In the first round of placements at the IITs saw a lukewarm response with a 60% cut in recruitments compared to last year. FMCG companies, investment banking firms and private oil companies have radically cut their recruitment numbers.
Day 1                           2008   2007

IIT Roorkee                    15     85

IIT Bombay                   70   120

IIT Delhi                        80   125
In IIT Roorkee, the number hired on the first day fell from 70 to 15. Bombay fared slightly better, with 70 hired on the first day this year compared to 120 last year. IIT Delhi has fared the best, with 48 pre placement offers, and a placement of 80 students on the first day as opposed to 125 last year.

However with the situation becoming better the institutes are hoping to receive an average of at least 200 companies in the days to come.
