Former top cop of the state Ajai Kumar Singh, scholar Bannanje Govindacharya, and Tulu writer Darbe Krishnananda Chowta will receive Honoris Causa at the convocation. While Ajai will receive an honorary doctorate for his contribution to literature and administration, Govindacharya will do so for literature, and Chowta for literature and social service.
The University will also award 70 doctor of philosophy degrees (arts 16, science 47, commerce five and education two). In addition, there will be 31 gold medals and 56 cash prizes that will be handed over to students. In total, there are 63 ranks (post-graduate 44, under graduate 19, arts 12, science and technology 32, law four, education three, and post graduate diploma four), VC T C Shivashankara Murthy said here on Thursday.
Total number of students who appeared for examinations in 2009-10 is 21,415 including 70 for PhD, 37 for MPhil, 2,632 for PG, 18,640 for UG, and 36 for PG diploma. These include 12,036 girls. Off these, 13,833 candidates passed for an overall pass percentage of 64.59 including all 70 and 37 who appeared for PhD, and MPhil respectively, 2,451 who appeared for PG (93.12%), 11,245 for UG (60.33%) and 30 for PG diploma (83.33%).
However, only 793 students or 5.7 % of the successful candidates will receive the degrees in person at the convocation from the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University H S Bhardwaj. These include all 70 who have completed their PhD, 19 MPhil, 214 PG, 487 UG, and three PG diploma candidates. The various examinations conducted by the university during 2009-10 include 14 PG courses, 21 UG course and three PG diploma courses.
