St Stephen's College celebrated its Foundation Day on Tuesday with the unveiling of its master plan for 2050. The college is planning a major revamp of its infrastructure and academic facilities in the coming years, which was discussed by its eminent alumni in the college on Tuesday. St Stephen's also felicitated one of its former students, deputy chairperson of Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, at the occasion.
The college has constituted a committee to draft the master plan by inviting its alumni like the current vice-chancellor of Delhi University, Professor Dinesh Singh, chief election commissioner S Y Qureshi, former governor of Mizoram and Jharkhand, Ved Marwah, along with college principal Valson Thampu. As part of the plan, the college is likely to start new courses, identify infrastructural needs to renovate and expand the college building, facilitate the participation of alumni in the academic process and institute professorial chairs in the college to promote research.
The alumni present at the Foundation Day offered their suggestions and feedback for the master plan urging that the college could not continue to rely on its past laurels. The existing students also contributed to the discussion by demanding the introduction of new and innovative courses. "The student community feels that one need not wait for 2050 to begin new courses which are already offered in the university like psychology and sociology," said Aditya, a student.
