Students and parents in the state are voicing their protest over the admission process into engineering colleges in the state through All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).

Three institutions in the state, Nirma University, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT) give admission on the basis of performance in AIEEE.

The students have to fill up separate forms for these institutions. In addition, each university has its own admission process.

"We have to purchase Rs 1,000 form for each institution and apply separately. Also after the AIEEE results are announced there will be separate rounds of interview," said a student. The students are demanding that a common consortium, like in other states, be created in Gujarat for selecting students on basis of AIEEE.

While Nirma varsity has 75% engineering seats rese-rved for students from the state, PDPU and DAIICT reserve only 50%. "The admission process is different as we take aggregate score of AIEEE and the Gujarat board for selecting the students. But other colleges don't follow this system as a common consortium is not possible," said N V Varsani, vice-chancellor, Nirma University.

However, sources said that the university rakes in lakhs of rupees as thousands of students apply for admission.
