Karnataka High Court on Tuesday admitted a writ petition filed by R L Jalappa Institute of Technology requesting the court to direct the fee regulatory committee to provide them the fee structure determined by the committee headed by Justice Padmaraj for engineering colleges.
The court has issued notice to the state government on the matter.
The petitioner contended that though the fee fixation committee determined the fee structure and submitted it to the government for notification, the government has not passed it on. Instead of notifying the fee structure, the state government has been putting pressure on the Association of Private Engineering Colleges to agree to part with a certain number of seats in their colleges for allotting them to students who cleared COMEDK and other exams on a subsidised fee structure, says the petition.
The petitioner argued that the burden of educating the students whom the government will allot seats will have to be borne by other students.
In one of the cases, the court has observed that "it is wellestablished all over the world that those who seek professional education must pay for it", argued the petitioner, adding that the principle underlying the pronouncement was that professional education led to betterment of an individual. Therefore, he should pay for it, says the petition.
The division bench comprising justices V G Sabahit and Manohar admitted the petition and issued notices to the state and fee regulatory committee.
