Shielding means,the electrostatic f0rc b/w outr electr0ns and nucleus is reduced due to presenc of electr0ns inbetween,whn ths shieldin is les,its calld inefctiv shieldin. . .and electr0static attracti0n is large. . . .ths is only what i remembr

actually ineffective sheliding is caused due filling up of elec. in the d and f orbitals which cannot shield the force f attraction of the nucleus as well as s nd p electrons can. threrefore the value of sigma ranges from 0.3-0.35 for shilding provided by d electrons. it is due to their diffused shape

If we move down the group the number of proton added is equal to number of electron added so an outer most electron should see same charge at the center. But this does not happen as inner electron of d and f block cannot do not provide same repulsion due to poor screening. Due to this effective central charge increases for outer electrons. This leads to phenomenon like lanthanide contraction.
