my views on new iits are a little bit different from others..according to me its one of the best option for any aspirant....

1)many think that they dont even have there own campuses so we dont get facilities->atleast 8-9 crores have been spent on renovating the temprorary campused and arranging for required facilties and all iits except rajasthan are to shift to permanent campuses by 2011..many iits even in there temporary campuses have wi-fi,dedicated computer center, centralised library, sports facilities ,medical facilities etc............

2)they dont have alumni network->its not like that  alumni of iit bombay would not help iit delhi people there is a network of alumni from all iits ,its not specific of city......even graduates from new iits would belong to the same alumni network as iit delhi, bombay or else...

3)there is no certainity that there placements would be gud->i think there is not even 1%chance of that...top academicians have thought over these new iits and they have not started new iits with 500 seats but with only 120 seats..there are only 40 seats in each and only 20 for genral and i think those 20 will be way above the other 20 category students...so in todays time its not a difficult task for a iit to place 20 students with a package of arnd 9 lacs....i think the placements of new iits if not more would be atleast equal to other top colleges beacuse of less student strength in them..

4)i just dont understand why people take low braches in old iits when they can get gud branches in new....

if they are just after the brand name then whether it be iit delhi or iit indore both will be called iitians and both belong to elite class..

5)at max students of 2010 batch would have to live 1.5 yr in temporary campuses but the rest 2.5 yearas they live in the most advanced and well constructed campused in india...

6)the students are getting a chance to shape a iit...a college is because of their student...who gets an opportunity to shape the name and fame of an iit but we have got the golden opportunity...

7)at present people are leaving new iits just beacuse they are getting it easily..see people are always after things which are difficult to get..people want to be iitian just beacuse its difficult to be....i am sure in future people will definitely regret ther decision not to take new iits...

just take example of iit hyderabad in just 1 year closing rank of its cs ws arn 2300 just 300 above closing rank of iit-g,and opening rank of its electrical was 985 so you can just see how fast these iits are picking up..i am sure in 2 years no one wud get cs in  any iit even at a rank of 2300...

its just my opinion your views might differ..

it takes 20-25 years to set up anew college.. overnoght u open a college and brand it IIT doesn't make it IIT.. People are forgetting why the iits are famous.. not because of the brand name byut because of the fact that they have the best faculties in whole of the country.. the new iits don't have any experienced faculties.... and many department still don't have reputable faculties.. so what if they are under the umbrella of the old iits???? it takes tiome to set up a college.. barnd name isn't everuthing.. u may call urself an iitian just for the namesake. But if u don't have enough hand-on experience during college days, u will suffer iun job..qualifying in iit is not easy but qualifying is not everything.. companies don't want wasted brains....

see in new iits aswell faculty is recruited by the same procedure and same eligibility as old iits ,so you cannot question the experience of faculty ,also i dont think experience is every thing just you think and tell me would younot prefer a 33 year old live-wire who is having the same qualification as other prof. but with less experience..and regarding your experience..you are getting to shape your college coordinate all activities..and i dont think anything would give more exposure than this...

u may recruit the faculty by any way but can you guarantee that they will be as experienced as the professors in the old iits??? When companies come for placement they want to see how much of industrial exposure have you got.. They don't want to know how have you coordinated your college fests..though to a certain extent they take note of it.... When you have old professors, the advantage is that they will know how to approacha aprticular subject and evolve their teaching according to that.. Expecting that out of a newly recruited person is a bit too much don't u think..And professors currently teaching in their old institutes wouldn't want to migrate to a college which has been freshly created.. It doesn't matter how modern campuses are... all colleges now have wi-fi enabled libraries..Some lab equipments take upto a year for delivery and how do you expect the new iits to ahve such facilities... It takes a lot of planning to set up a state of art college and time too... It would have been better if some of the old institutes have been made iits such Cochin University and BESU instead of granting them IIEST status..

I agree with most of the points. My uncle whos at IIT-BBS also says that most of the faculty members there come from the parent IIT (IIT-Kgp here). Faculty will not be a problem. Yes practical classes are affected somewhat, but he feels that the new IITs are much better than NITs (barring the first 3). He was himself a prof. at NIT - Rkl previously and he says that the facilities are much better here

If the faculty at the new iits are from the parent iits, so what happens to the faculty in the old iits... The opening of the new iits is diluting the entire system...

see according to what i have come to know psus have a policy to first go to all the iits then nits, dce etc..so psus are not specific of old iits...also many private firms also would have somewhat same policy....also i dont think i would doubt the equipment ..as you said it takes abt 1 year and specific equipment is required only from 2nd year onwards so by the time present batch needs it ,it would be available..also i think one of the most important thing for placements is contacts of professors and this is the main resons for having mentor iits..so that the faculty at mentor iits can use their contacts and get them to recruit from the new iits.....even noted academicians believe that in arnd 13-14 yrs these iits could give competition to old iits and these iits would develop at a much much faster rates than the old iits developed when they were made because of the huge funds and mous with several foreign universities...

see at present many people rate iit guwahati and iit hyderabad almost equal ,you can see that from closing ranks even when its just 2 years old..
mannu is offline comment by mannu      (posted on 14 Jun 2010 15:26:43 IST)
the problem with IIT guwahati is majority of the crowd is scared of going there / distance factor. That is the only reason for its dip in cut off's.But the fact is , it is a well established institute with the finest faculty , infrastructure and security.

Infrastructure wise no iit can beat iit guwahati......Its the best.....Its ranked low in the rankings because of the media's prejudice against the North-East...
Vivek Roy is offline comment by Vivek Roy      (posted on 22 Jun 2010 17:56:23 IST)
Media's prejudice against north-east.... u r kidding me....When the first IIT(kharagpur) was made no-one wanted to go there because it was a new college... Students in West Bengal preferred Jadavpur University and BESU.... Tell me a college that is merely 2 years old and doesn't have a campus of its own be as good as a college thats 40 years old???????????? It will take another 2 and a half-years for their own campuses to be completely functional... I didn't clear IIT and you may say thats the reason.... But the old IITs are the best and nothing can come in its comparison...(except IISc)

i am not saying that new iits have gud infrastructure as of now its just enough for the students currently studying but after one year when all the iits are slated to move to permanent campused then leave the nits their campuses would leave old iits behind....i am not saying that currently they are better then top nits..my point is that after one or two years these will be better than nits....so while taking admsn we shud be looking at future...

DO U THINK NITS WONT IMPROVE IN THAT TIME? u would say student quality will be bad and all the guys in it are noobs. but atleast there is no fighting between these colleges. the future depends on how on performs in that college. and for performance nits and iits provide good platform.
grand canyon is offline comment by grand canyon      (posted on 22 Jun 2010 21:04:21 IST)
wheathre its IITS OR BITS OR NITS at the end of 4 years its performance that matters a guy. yes new iits are good and are bound to develop but nits are also fast developing ever since central government took over.
