Year 2001: Two colleges were offrd IITstatus.REC Roorkee acceptd and turnd IIT RoorkeeISM Dhanbad rejected bcoz of Alumni pressure.Personally i dont think it needs IIT tag.It is 3rd best in World for Earth Sciences courses. It exists from 1926 and the first proposal of opening an IIT was conceivd in 1946.ISM dhanbad enjoys a high reputation and well placed Alumni.Giving it an IIT tag is just demeaning its value. It is managd by MHRD just like IIT's so the saying that giving an iit status wud fetch it more govt. money is not absolutely correct.but THAT's ALL MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION ONLY.

Well, I feel that both ISMU and IT-BHU should be converted into IITs because of their high standards. I would have been happy if the UPA Govt had followed the path of the NDA Govt in upgrading great institutes to IITs instead of trying to create new ones from scratch. But, then, who am I?

whatever may be the past.....it doesn't matter what matters is present...ISM dhanbad is surely lacking in pplacements....i mean the one's going in bhu have just scored about 10 marks more in iit....so u cannot put a hard line between students of ISMU and BHU....so y r placement lack behind....??? IT BHU avg. pckg for CS:7.6lac pa ISMU avg. pckg for CS:4.7 lac pa It's not the because of student....as i said earlier 10 marks not makes one intelligent....it surely has to be institue or it's location for lack of placement....((((i m nt talking abt petro)))))

No ways man ISM has terribly poor placements compared to top 5 NITs ,DTU,JADAVPUR,COE guindy,IIITs,BITSP,NSIT,ETC. moreover cse, tronics, trical, mech, are pretty new wid INEXPERIENCED FACULTY,its poorer dan new IITs....yes but its best in asia 4r earth sciences mining petroleum..so just for dese few gud branches u can't grant it IIT status

Reasons: 1.Placement cell is bit strict. 2.Due to location diff. many international mnc's like yahoo and google r nt visiting 3.CSE dept. at Ism doesnt give high gpa's,thus recruiting comp. are put in dilemma!

Problem which lies with dhanbaad is not due to lack of faculty or absence of substance on the behalf of students, its due to the poor marketing of this institute owing to its location and prestige. When we talk about Dhanbaad we are counting on its glorious history in earth science. We are talking about the engineering which extracts repertoire from the earth and not as an institute of computer or electrical engineering. Its name Indian School Mines underlines clearly that its not a premiere institute in computer or electrical engineering.People who are talking about its past and IIT equivalent status are oblivious of the fact that modern branches are new in this campus and there is hardly any contribution towards research oriented studies.Potential of any faculty is measured in terms of its high quality papers.Other thing is about the poor marketing, companies are reluctant in recruiting software engineers from a mining school for obvious reasons. Its the responsibility of institute to project it as an engineering college rather than a school of mines.Location of dhanbaad adds to make the matter worse. For example trivandrum has got the enough infrastructure by 2000 as a technopark still infosys took considerable amount of time to invest there and truth is that it still pales in front of bangalore and hyderabad.Initial placements does not matter much,if you have the potential no one can stop you irrespective of college you belong to..

I completely knew abt the fact that most branches are completely new bt i just pointd out the Fact.Poor Marketing is really an Issue.I cannot say abt the Industries bt mst stdnts(evn ones going to high profile coaching insti) consider it as the secondry institute.
