Graphene, the hottest new material in electronics, is remarkably simple: a flat sheet of pure carbon rings—just one atom thick—that resembles chicken wire. But this unassuming structure has caught the attention of researchers at laboratories in the United Kingdom, Texas, and Georgia and even at IBM. They are studying graphene for a wide range of applications, from computer chips to communication devices to touch screens. It might even put a fresh spark into the electrical grid.Consisting of a single layer of graphite, graphene is an allotrope of carbon that has been studied for decades. It did not seem technologically important, however, until scientists   ...

Renewable energy has a critical role to play in reducing greenhouse gases and leading the United States toward energy independence. That role should soon be getting bigger: The U.S. government is pushing for a 100 percent increase in renewable energy by 2012. The two biggest sources are the wind and the sun. But the variable nature of wind and solar energy can cause problems with matching supply to demand—problems that would be greatly eased if only we had a really good way of storing electricity on an industrial scale. Currently there are several storage systems vying for dominance.Compressed-Air Energy StorageAt night, when the strongest winds blow and custo   ...

Technologists keep on flirting with the Quantum Mechanics in order to accomplish a feat by incarnating quantum computer. They have created the first rudimentary solid-state quantum processor, taking another step toward the ultimate dream of building a quantum computer. They also used the two-qubit superconducting chip to successfully run elementary algorithms, such as a simple search, demonstrating quantum information processing with a solid-state device for the first time. Though the processor can perform only a few very simple quantum tasks, which have been demonstrated before with single nuclei, atoms and photons. But this is the first time they've been possib   ...

The researcher have found a new property which can be quite beneficial in field of computing. They found that the new "superatoms" – clusters of atoms that share electrons and can mimic the behaviour of other elements – have been devised with magnetic properties for the first time. The breakthrough provides a way to design novel nano-scale building blocks with controllable magnetic properties that could be used to make faster computer processors and denser memory storage.Superatoms were discovered in the 1980s when Walter Knight and colleagues found that groups of sodium atoms can share electrons amongst themselves. The electrons form a collect   ...

The researchers of Computer Science have developed two new tools to help computer programmers select from among thousands of options within the application programming interfaces (APIs) that are used to write applications in Java, today's most popular programming language. The tools — Jadeite and Apatite  — take advantage of human-centered design techniques to significantly reduce the time and guesswork associated with finding the right classes and methods of APIs.APIs are standardized methods that a Java program uses to ask the computer's operating system or another program to do something, such as opening a file or sending an email. Automatic transmissions is now in the very base of the automobile industry and is basically divided into two types: those used in front−engine, front−wheel drive (FF) vehicles and those used in front−engine, rear−wheel drive (FR) vehicles.Transmissions used in front−wheel drive vehicles are designed to be more compact than transmissions used in rear−wheel drive vehicles because they are mounted in the engine compartment. They are commonly referred to as a "transaxle." The differential is an integral part of the front−wheel drive transmission, whereas the differential for the rear−wheel drive transmission is m   ...

The world is running down on the fuels and scientist are trying to find a way to curb the growing energy needs by efficient use of the available resources. Engineers at MIT had made a break through by building a shock absorber that, in large vehicles, can generate enough energy to charge the battery and run electronics like headlights and a stereo. In conventional vehicles, shocks convert the vertical motion caused by running over a bumpy road into heat. That heat energy is then wasted. The MIT team’s shock absorber, called GenShock, harnesses the energy generated by traversing rough roads and converts it into useful electricity, easing the workload of the gas   ...

Engineering as a career option is finalized at a stage when the kids are not mature enough to decide. Usually, their career choice is based on the preference of their parents, and obviously those giving the advice are not engineers themselves, nor do they have the entire experience of engineering as a profession. It is quite obvious that while opting for a profession, children themselves are not aware of what engineering as a career is all about. In the field of engineering, vision and skills know no boundaries. Students have to accept challenges as opportunities to prove themselves. For instance, being an aerospace engineer, you might get a chance of working on cryo   ...

India has been a name synonymous with high-tech engineering and technical education across the globe since decades. The education related to engineering and technical arenas has been developing faster than anywhere else on earth. Ever since the early eighties, the era of rapid industrialization and economic growth India was recognized as a hub of some of the most hard-working and intelligent engineers of the world. Today, India boasts of its position as the second largest number of engineering students in the world for all of which the medium of instruction is English. In accordance to the recent survey by the United Nations, the Indian economy is one of the fastest   ...

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is held for admission to varied M.Tech admissions in most of the institutes of national repute. Scoring high in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a pre-requisite not only for NITs, IITs but also for several private-owned institutions across the country. Not only this, while conducting interviews for admission, 70% of weightage is given to GATE score and 30% is meant for academic merit by most of the premier institutes. All the institutions declare the minimum percentage of marks required and GATE score is essential for almost all of these institutes. Hence, GATE is the way for all those who are looking for admi   ...

India’s growth in recent years has been led by the services sector only. It should be noted that Indian’s spend nearly $4 billion annually to send their children abroad for higher studies and technical training while there is no reason for India not emerging as a global hub for higher education and technical training. The real challenge therefore, is to expand capacities in higher education to keep ahead of the curve of rising domestic and global demand. India is well known for its large pool of technical manpower and inhibiting our present as well as coming generation from taking quick steps towards success is not right by providing them only just limit   ...

After pursuing engineering, all engineering students stand at the crossroad of making a decisive choice so as to explore interesting avenues as a choice for their careers. A majority of people opt for mainly two things that are management or M.Tech. With the current economic scenario of the India, there are various colleges that are not able to give 100% placement to their students. This results in candidates making a tough choice between management and M.Tech. In order to get admission in M.Tech the examination that holds significant importance on national as well as international level is GATE.  So, if you are the one seeking admission in post-graduation prog   ...
